The primary responsibility for the Translator/Interpreter is to provide high quality translation and interpreting to foster efficient, clear and concise communication between the SAFEMed office and its visitors, partners, clients and counterparts, as well as government officials on national, regional and district levels in Ukraine. The Translator/Interpreter will provide linguistic and cross cultural support to visiting consultants to facilitate successful implementation of SAFEMed activities in Ukraine.


This position is for local hires. No allowances or relocation available. 

Specific Responsibilities

Provide Accurate and Timely Interpreting and Translation 40%

  • Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpreting for the Chief of Party and visiting staff and consultants at conferences, round tables, forums, workshops and meetings with high level government officials and stakeholders. Understand the ramifications of each format and move effectively between these formats during a single instance, as required.
  • Provide cross cultural support to the Chief of Party and visiting staff and consultants by capturing intended implications and nuances in the political, regional, ethnic and cultural context.

Contribute to developing and delivering effective written and verbal communications (reports and presentations) 30%

  • Provide timely and high quality written translation of technical, regulatory and administrative documents, such as technical guidelines, extracts of laws, legislative documents, contracts and other official correspondence from English into Ukrainian and vice versa.
  • Participate in the preparation of project reports, presentations, meeting minutes and other documents, e.g. quarterly and annual reports, county specific reports (e.g. progress reports). This may include, but is not limited to, translation, proof-reading, formatting, and other review activities.

Support visiting staff and consultants to collaborate with stakeholders 20%

  • Liaise and foster successful collaboration with stakeholders on behalf of the visiting staff and consultants including appointment management, preparation, formatting and dissemination of the technical documents, training materials, reports and presentations.

Facilitate internal and external project communications 10%

  • Develop and maintain a unified project glossary of the most frequently used technical terms for circulation by the project staff, and cross references in the project materials and website.
  • Contribute to smooth and efficient communication and a seamless working environment, which conforms to all legal and procedural requirements of the operations of MSH within Ukraine.

Qualifications and Experience

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English Linguistics or similar area

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree

Required Minimum Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in translation and interpreting with responsibilities as described above

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in Translation and interpreting in medicine, pharmacy, or public health preferred

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Demonstrated skills interpreting both consecutively and simultaneously,
  • Native Ukrainian language skills required. Fluent Russian is welcome.
  • High level of proficiency in English including reading, writing and speaking skills required.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Power Point, Excel, and electronic mail required.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team. Polite, respectful and tactful, and able to relate well to people


  • Knowledge of subject areas and relevant terminology strongly preferred,
  • Experience with Ukraine’s public health sector and familiarity with USAID programs strongly preferred

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, take initiative and strictly meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:

Travel Requirements: Ability to travel throughout Ukraine up to 30% of the time.

Keyboard use, pulling drawers, lifting papers <10lbs.

International travel may be required
