Overview

The Accountant provides direct support to field offices (FO) and headquarters (HQ).  The Accountant is responsible for reviewing files from the FO, importing these into Serenic Navigator (NAV), preparing and reviewing account reconciliations, and preparing or reviewing journal entries, along with importing files and posting entries.

Specific Responsibilities

Accounting (50%) 

  • Responsible for the day to day accounting functions of the organization.  This includes, but is not limited to: 
    • Preparing and posting journal entries for field office and HQ,
    • Work with FO to provide support of the monthly close process which includes training FO on procedures
    • Manage and reconcile various general ledger accounts for HQ and FO.
    • Create FO imports of files from the FO Quickbooks files, journal entries and recommend entries, if needed for FO
    • Review and prepare Paid Time Off (PTO) files from the FO prior to importing files.
    • Enter transactions into accounting system/NAV as needed.
    • Collaborate and liaise with other MSH employees related to various financial needs including reclassification entries.

Analysis and Compliance (30%)

  • Become familiar with donor regulations including FAR, AIDAR, and 2 CFR 200.
  • Support the overall timely close cycles on a monthly and annual basis; support the annual external audit, as well as, various donor and other compliance audits; perform analysis on a regular basis as part of controls and compliance to ensure that monthly trends are reasonable and anomalies investigated; ad hoc analysis.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations and analyze financial information for FO and HQ for control measures related to trends, anomalies and miscodings.
  • Support a disciplined close schedule which requires working with the FO to ensure compliance and performing various processes at HQ in the financial system as part of the standard monthly close process.
  • Review FO bank accounts, advances, payroll related liabilities and other accounts each month.
  • Assist with the annual financial audit, as well as, other audits required by donors or other compliance audits

Accounting Support (20%)

  • Support the Finance department with various initiatives including system initiatives, upgrades and implementations.
  • Provide training and support to the FO as part of the ongoing monthly financial close process. Update existing documentation and initiate documenting processes as needed.
  • Recommend improved methods of existing processes and strive to streamline for increased efficiencies and improved controls.
  • Support cross-training of peers.

Qualifications and Experience

Education

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business management

Experience

Required:

  • 2 years of experience in an accounting position
  • Experience with financial systems

Preferred:

  • 4 years of accounting experience
  • Experience working with USAID funded projects
  • Work experience with projects supported by international organizations
  • Serenic Navigator system experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of basic tenets of Internal Control and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Excel spreadsheets, word processing, and electronic mail along with data entry experience).
  • Excellent communication skills
  • English fluency required (including speaking, writing, understanding, and reading and the ability to work with vendors, staff and stakeholders in English). Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish a plus.

Physical Demands

  • Office environment including keyboard use, pulling drawers, lifting papers <10 lbs., ability to sit for extended periods of time.
